Picture pulling up in front of a house for sale, aiming your smart phone’s camera at it, and within seconds being able to view and capture all the information about the listing. From there you can check out more pictures, watch a video walkthrough, email the information to yourself (or someone else) and even contact the listing agent. Sounds pretty cool right?
The technology is called Augmented Reality. It’s already available, and I’m sure the race is on to create the application that does what I just described. I know 1 company, Layar already has such a product. The question is, when will they bring it to the US?
Here’s a demonstration video:
The technology behind this still just blows me away! It will definitely be a game changer in the marketing world and I can’t wait to see what the developers can do with it.
Some other uses I can think of (and found in doing research for this post) right off the top of my head:
- Business reviews – Yelp could integrate it into their mobile platform
- Police – add facial recognition software that stores your crime record
- Social Networking – facial recognition mixed with twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn ID’s (Augmented ID)
The possibilities are probably endless as to what can be done with this technology. In the Real Estate industry we have some players that are taking advantage of mobile technologies (think Zillow/Trulia and their iPhone apps). Who will jump on this one first?
